Inner Harbour First
Nations
Interpretive Walkway
Program
The City of Victoria
sits on the site if what was one of the
traditional villages of the Costal Salish.
The harbour was the centre of aboriginal
communal life. The purpose of this project
is to make citizens and visitors alike aware
of the historical relationship between the
First Nations and this site.
We propose to develop
a self-guided interpretive walkway around
the Inner Harbour that will focus on local
Aboriginal history, art, culture and language.
There will be eight site markers on historically
significant locations chosen by the First
Nations people, with the interpretation
of some aspect of aboriginal life at each
site. This will include the incorporation
of First Nations art on each marker as well
as information brochures and self-guided
walking tour map.
Project
Partners:
City of Victoria, Provincial Capital Commission
(PCC), Greater Victoria Harbour Authority
and the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations.
